Behaviour

At our academy, behaviour is rooted in our core values of Endeavour, Kindness, Responsibility, and Respect. These principles underpin everything we do, and every member of our community is expected to embody them each day.

Our values are not simply words; they are actively taught and consistently reinforced through assemblies, thematic days, and our exceptional personal development programme. This ensures that students understand not only what is expected of them, but why these values matter in shaping their character and future success.

Leaders have created a calm, safe, and supportive environment where all pupils can thrive. Clear expectations, consistent routines, and strong pastoral systems ensure that students feel secure, respected, and ready to learn. From the moment students arrive each day and are welcomed by staff, there is a strong sense of belonging combined with high expectations.

We have established highly effective behaviour systems built on clarity, consistency, and strong communication. Expectations are explicitly taught through assemblies, tutor time,  and visible reminders across the school. This consistent approach ensures fairness and helps foster a culture of positive behaviour.

A Strong Sense of Community

Positive relationships are at the heart of our academy. We actively promote inclusion, celebration, and pride through a wide range of events such as Culture Day, British Values Day, religious celebrations including Christmas and Eid, and engaging activities like World Book Day.

Students are encouraged to contribute to the life of the school and the wider community. Opportunities include:

  • Sending Christmas cards and gifts to local businesses
  • Performing in nursing homes and at local transport hubs
  • Creating community artwork, including an award-nominated bridge mural
  • Contributing to our Heritage Magazine through creative projects such as printmaking
  • Supporting the Community Hub, including preparing frozen meals for those in need
  • Welcoming primary school pupils to experience lessons and performances

Student voice is central to our ethos. Pupils feel heard, valued, and empowered to shape their school experience, contributing to a culture built on mutual respect.

High Expectations and Recognition

We believe in maintaining high expectations for all students, alongside recognising and celebrating success.

Our carefully designed rewards system includes:

  • Golden tickets and points-based incentives
  • Certificates, badges, and public recognition
  • Half-termly reward events
  • Enrichment opportunities such as trips, workshops, and sports activities

These rewards motivate students to consistently demonstrate positive behaviour and commitment to our values.

Student Leadership and Responsibility

Students are given meaningful opportunities to take on leadership roles within the academy. Prefects and sixth form mentors play a vital role in supporting younger students, modelling excellent behaviour, and strengthening our inclusive community.

Preventing Bullying, Discrimination and Abuse.

At HASN, we are committed to creating a safe, caring, and respectful environment where all students can learn and thrive. Bullying, discrimination or abuse of any kind is unacceptable and will always be taken seriously.

What are bullying, discrimination and abuse?

These are behaviours that are intentionally hurtful, intimidating, or aggressive, often repeated over time.

Bullying can include:

  • Verbal bullying – name-calling, teasing, rumours
  • Physical bullying – hitting, pushing, or and any  form of violence
  • Racial bullying – racial taunts, gestures, or graffiti aimed at someone because of their race or ethnicity
  • Sexual bullying/abuse – unwanted physical contact or sexually abusive comments
  • Homophobic bullying – bullying focused on someone’s sexuality or perceived sexuality
  • Emotional abuse – threatening behaviour, exclusion, threatening behaviour or tormenting someone
  • Cyber bullying – using social media, messages, or online platforms to threaten, insult, or harass someone

Bullying can but doesn't always have a discriminatory element.

Discrimination means treating others less favourably because of their characteristics, such as gender, age, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Between young people, this can range from name calling to much more serious and targeted harassment and abuse.

By abuse, we refer to situations where one child or a group of children harms, exploits, or abuses another.

How We Support Students

Students are encouraged to speak to a trusted adult if they experience or witness bullying, discrimination or abuse. Support is available through:

  • Heads of Year and senior staff
  • Peer mentors and student leaders
  • Learning Support Services
  • External interventions such as one to one and group mentoring, counselling

All students are encouraged to speak to a trusted adult at school as soon as they witness or experience any behaviour that gives them cause for concern.

All concerns are investigated thoroughly, recorded appropriately, and followed up to ensure students feel safe and supported.

Our Approach

The Academy works proactively to prevent bullying, discrimination and abuse through assemblies, the SPHERE programme, mentoring, and student leadership initiatives. Clear procedures are in place for reporting incidents and supporting both victims and perpetrators. Our overarching focus on our values of Respect, Kindness, Responsibility and Endeavour reinforces that our communuity has no place for these behaviours.

Sanctions

Bullying, Discriminatory and Abusive behaviour is serious, and may result in:

  1. Warnings and detentions
  2. Written warnings and internal reflection sanctions
  3. Suspensions
  4. Permanent exclusion in serious or repeated cases

We always involve parents where these behaviours are suspected or found.

What Students Should Do

If you are being bullied or see bullying happening:

  • Speak to a member of staff
  • Tell a parent, friend, peer mentor, or student leader
  • Report concerns as soon as possible
  • Support others by speaking up safely and responsibly
