Our Curriculum
Our curriculum is deliberately designed to meet the needs of our learners. With a mixed academic and vocational offer and 69% of students taking vocational or mixed pathways, we ensure every young person can access a route that leads to meaningful progression.
This is reflected in our destinations: around 80% of students progress to university each year, including to highly competitive courses such as Medicine at King’s, Architecture at UCL, Politics at Bristol, and Cyber Security at Warwick, as just a small snippet of our incredible destinations.
Our vocational pathways are equally strong, with students securing places at Nottingham, York, and degree apprenticeships with employers such as Reuters and Deloitte.
A student on the Kinetic football programme secured an apprenticeship with Deloitte after completing CTECs in Sport and Business, with grades of D*D*D. While playing football for the programme. He has since been back with Deloitte to talk about his experience and inspire the next cohort.
Our fantastic Sixth Form outcoms are rooted in strong teaching, with out Sixth Form teachers among the very best in the school. Sixth Form lessons at HASN combine traditional direct instruction from subject experts with a strong emphasis on growing independence for our learners.
Sixth Form teaching, the HASN way includes:
- Strong teacher subejct expertise
- Academic challenge for all
- A focus on academic oracy for all learners
- Explicitly taught independence, grown over time
- A consistent focus on examination requirements to enable the accessing of top outcomes
- An expectation of extended academic reading within every course
Our enrichment offer is another standout feature. Participation is extremely high across the year group, including for disadvantaged students, and a significant proportion take part in three or more activities. Our offer is broad and ambitious, from Duke of Edinburgh, chess, performing arts and basketball, to mentoring programmes, Bold Voices, Harris Scholars and Harris Experience pathways, and a rich programme of careers and guest speaker events, including visiting companies such as Deloitte, and prestigious speakers such as Dame Mary Archer.
This is as well as our Kinetic football programme, which has over 30 male and female students every year, and they play and train 3 times a week, as well as gaining from the wider benefits of the programme, such as the Beyond Equality Workshop on toxic masculinity. Sixth Form students also lead on organising school-wide initiatives, such as our community iftar, culture day and our Jamaican hurricane appeal. This breadth ensures that every student can find a place to belong, develop leadership, and build cultural capital.
