SPHERE

The Social, Personal, Health, Economic, Relationships Education (SPHERE) curriculum at HASN provides a comprehensive framework for students to learn about themselves, their wellbeing, their society and their futures.
SPHERE covers a wide range of learning including:
- PSHEE (Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education).
- RSE (Relationships and Sex Education).
- SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural Development).
- Careers and work-related learning.
- British Values (democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance).
The SPHERE programme ensures students develop a well-rounded understanding of their responsibilities as individuals and citizens of modern Britain.
Students learn about topics such as:
- Healthy relationships and consent
- Online safety and risk
- Mental and physical wellbeing
- Equality and diversity
- Financial education and future pathways
Our SPHERE programme equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to stay safe, make informed decisions and develop positive relationships. Ensuring students are well prepared for life in modern Britain.
How does SPHERE relate to Safeguarding and Behaviour?
PSHE and RSHE play a key role in our safeguarding culture. Students learn how to:
- Recognise risks
- Seek support
- Make safe and responsible choices
Our curriculum reinforces our values of Respect, Responsibility, Kindness and Endeavour, helping students understand expectations and develop strong character.
What do parents need to know about Relationships and Sex Education?
Our RSE curriculum is delivered in line with statutory guidance from the Department for Education. It is:
- Age-appropriate and inclusive
- Carefully sequenced
- Sensitive to the needs of our diverse community

Parents and carers have the right to request withdrawal from non-statutory sex education elements. We welcome conversations with families and are committed to working in partnership to support every student.
Our aim is to ensure all students leave Harris Academy South Norwood with the knowledge and confidence to build positive relationships and stay safe. SPHERE education, including RSE, is an important part of this. If you still want to discuss withdrawal or adjustments to your child's experience of RSE at our academy, please contact us.
