Psychology

Why We Study Psychology

We study psychology to better understand human behaviour. It helps us to develop a critical awareness of the self and others. Through developing an understanding of one’s own behaviour, it empowers the individual to take control of their own actions. We study Psychology to understand, predict and even influence human behaviour.

What studying psychology is like at HASN

In Psychology lessons, students will learn about a wide range of topics relating to human behaviour and mental processes. These include Social Influence, Memory, Attachment and Clinical Psychology and Mental Health.

Students will also study Approaches in Psychology, Biopsychology and Research Methods, developing an understanding of how psychological knowledge is gained and applied.

Most lessons will include opportunities to explore key studies, research evidence and theories that underpin psychological ideas, helping students to develop their understanding of different explanations of behaviour.

In Psychology, we express our ideas through extended writing, engaging with exam-style questions, essays and structured responses.

We also discuss and evaluate different viewpoints, developing our analytical and critical thinking skills. Students are encouraged to question theories and consider strengths, limitations and alternative explanations.

In the second year, students will study Issues and Debates in Psychology alongside optional topics such as Cognition and Development, Schizophrenia and Forensic Psychology.
