Relationships & Sex Education
Our curriculum challenges us to explore fundamental truths about the human condition and the physical world, enabling us to see beyond the immediate context of our lives and become the best version of ourselves we can be: turning mirrors into windows. Our tutor and assembly programmes are a fundamental way in which seek to accomplish this vision.
Values encompassed within the Personal Development Programme:
- Discipline, Resilience, Kindness, Gratitude, Pride and Service.
- British Values/Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural (SMSC)
- Personal Social Health & Economic Education (PSHE)/ – Relationships & Sex Education (RSE)
- Careers/Work Related Learning (WRL) and economic wellbeing
- The Brain and Learning
- Students play a central role

Tier-Two Word tests – Morphology Monday
Morphology Monday builds on the Academy's focus on explicit vocabulary instruction within our tutor literacy programme. Throughout the year, students will focus on the history of language, with a core focus on etymology, morphology from our words that are derived Greek, Latin, and Indian languages. This will then culminate in a ten-word spelling test, using the root word learnt that tutor time.
Literacy – First Chapter Thursday
First Chapter Thursday is about nurturing a genuine love for reading, building tutor community, exposing students to a diverse range of authors and texts, strengthening our students reading skills and listening comprehension. There is a high correlation between reading comprehension and listening comprehension, which means that students can gain all the benefits from independent reading by listening to the words being read aloud instead (Bell and Perfetti 1994). Each week, we would like to give every student the opportunity to experience a new story through their tutor reading aloud the first chapter. We hope that not only will every student’s reading comprehension improve,
but through exposing them to complete stories, read with passion and enthusiasm each week, we will inspire them to seek new reading opportunities independently.

Assemblies are thought-provoking and encourage students on the moral, social, religious, spiritual and health-related issues that affect their lives.
Assembly themes are based on the Values of the Personal Development Programme and are designed to integrate with the SPHERE programme. Assembly themes will also be based on significant cultural events and landmarks throughout the year such as Remembrance Day or World Book Day
Assemblies are delivered by Middle and senior leaders and will be supported/attended by HOY's and year-group APs.
Relationships and Sex Education
- The aim of RSE is to give young people the information they need to help them develop healthy, nurturing relationships of all kinds, not just intimate relationships. It should enable them to know what a healthy relationship looks like and what makes a good friend, a good colleague and a successful marriage or other type of committed relationship. It should also cover contraception, developing intimate relationships and resisting pressure to have sex (and not applying pressure). It should teach what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour in relationships.
- This will help pupils understand the positive effects that good relationships have on their mental wellbeing, identify when relationships are not right and understand how such situations can be managed.
Our RSE curriculum AIMS
- Delivers lessons where pupils feel safe and encourages participation by using a variety of teaching approaches with opportunities to develop critical thinking and relationship skills
- Is taught by staff regularly trained in RSE and PSHE (with expert visitors invited in to enhance and supplement the programme where appropriate)
- Is based on reliable sources of information, including about the law and legal rights, and distinguishes between fact and opinion
- Promotes safe, equal, caring and enjoyable relationships and discusses real-life issues appropriate to the age and stage of pupils, including friendships, families, consent, relationship abuse, sexual exploitation and safe relationships online
- Gives a positive view of human sexuality, with honest and medically accurate information, so that pupils can learn about their bodies and sexual and reproductive health in ways that are appropriate to their age and maturity
- Gives pupils opportunities to reflect on values and influences (such as from peers, media, faith and culture) that may shape their attitudes to relationships and sex, and nurtures respect for different views.

We ensure that the curriculum meets the needs of all students
- Fosters gender equality and LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans) equality and challenges all forms of discrimination in RSE lessons and in every-day school life
- Meets the needs of all pupils with their diverse experiences - including those with special educational needs and disabilities
- Seeks pupils’ views about RSE so that teaching can be made relevant to their real lives and assessed and adapted as their needs change.
