Why We Study Spanish
As a truly global language, Spanish provides students with a unique opportunity to learn a language that is spoken by over 500 million people in 20 countries across three continents. The teaching of Spanish enables students to express their ideas and thoughts in Spanish and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It also provides opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes as well as learn new ways of thinking in relation to languages. Learning Spanish provides the foundation for learning further languages, equipping students with skills that may support study and work in other countries.
What Studying Spanish Is Like at HASN:
Learning Spanish at HASN encourages students to develop their Spanish across the four key skills areas (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in every year group. The skills and topics that are covered in each year are filtered down into Key Stage 3 from the GCSE requirements (such as learning to describe a photograph and engaging in real-life scenarios, e.g. in a restaurant or train station). Students develop their skills and topics throughout the learning journey, but the work becomes progressively more challenging each year to allow for a greater depth of knowledge and understanding. Grammatical concepts are gradually introduced in year 7 and developed throughout the following years. For instance, at the end of the KS3 students should be able to produce Spanish in both the past, present and future tenses (e.g. I studied, I study, I am going to study) In KS4 these verbal tenses are expanded upon to include more complex tenses, such as the present continuous (I am studying), the present perfect (I have studied), the conditional (I would study)
