Why We Study English

We study English to share our love of the English language and to provoke critical and independent thought through a deep appreciation of the written and spoken word; to find within ourselves the ability to empathise, communicate, create and thrive beyond the classroom. We explore the human experience by examining, considering and challenging the values and morals reflected in stories, plays and poetry throughout history, from the greatest minds all over the world. From this bedrock, we act as guides to cultivate the core values of morality, empathy and resilience.

What Studying English Is Like at HASN 

In English lessons, students study a wide range of literary and non-literary texts, including prose, drama and poetry from different time periods and cultures. Most lessons include opportunities to read and analyse high-quality texts, hear them read aloud, and explore the ideas, themes and contexts that shape them. Students develop their understanding of how writers use language, form and structure to create meaning and influence readers. In English, students express their ideas through extended writing, crafting analytical essays and creative responses. They also engage in discussion and debate, developing their oracy skills by sharing interpretations and responding thoughtfully to the views of others. Students are encouraged to ask questions, explore different interpretations and support their ideas with evidence. Students study English in a safe and respectful environment, where all contributions are valued. Through exploring a range of perspectives and experiences, students develop empathy, resilience and an appreciation of diversity, reflecting and reinforcing the values of our school.
