Design Tech & Food Tech

Why We Study Design Tech
Design and Technology at HASN is a creative and practical subject where students design and make products to solve real-world problems. They draw on knowledge from subjects such as maths, science, engineering and art, developing a broad skill set.
The curriculum builds on prior learning, allowing students to apply and refine their skills across different projects. Students learn to take risks, think creatively and evaluate the impact of design on everyday life.
Through practical activities, they develop technical skills, create high-quality products, evaluate their work and understand key concepts such as nutrition and cooking, preparing them for life in a technological world.
What we study in Design and Technology
At Key Stage 3, Design and Technology introduces students to a range of materials, tools and techniques. They learn the design process researching, planning, making and evaluating, while exploring areas such as engineering, electronics and product design. Creativity and independence are key.
At Key Stage 4, students follow GCSE DT, developing deeper technical knowledge through a major design project. They learn about materials, manufacturing, sustainability and the impact of design on society, preparing them for careers in design and engineering.
In Food Technology, Key Stage 3 focuses on basic cooking skills, food safety and nutrition. Students learn to prepare simple dishes, understand healthy eating and develop confidence in the kitchen.
At Key Stage 4, students study Food Preparation and Nutrition GCSE, gaining advanced cooking skills and deeper knowledge of nutrition and food science. They complete practical assessments involving planning, cooking and evaluating dishes, building independence and valuable life skills.
