Harris Academies
All Academies in our Federation aim to transform the lives of the students they serve by bringing about rapid improvement in examination results, personal development and aspiration.

Ofsted Report

Harris Academy South Norwood underwent a no-notice inspection before half-term on 18 October 2017. The focus of the inspection was on how we resolve concerns that parents have about their child and the behaviour and conduct of students in and out of the academy’s two sites.

I am very pleased to report this inspection went extremely well. I am very pleased at the observations that the two inspectors made.

The report highlights the outstanding work our academy does to keep children safe and to turn around the performance of a range of students from all abilities. It was a supportive and collaborative professional experience for us all.

Here is a flavour of the report from David Storrie, HMI.

 A.    “Leaders and managers have taken effective action to maintain the high standards of behaviour and attitudes identified at the school’s previous inspection…School leaders have rightly focused on creating a unified school”

 B.    One pupil summed up the views of many when they told inspectors, ‘Treating everyone equally is an important quality for life. It is part of being a decent human being.’

 C.    “…support is given rapidly to pupils who need it. Your staff keep parents involved and work in partnership to overcome difficulties experienced by pupils and families.”

 D.   “Pupils spoken to during the inspection uniformly feel safe and have confidence in staff to take action when issues arise”

 E.    “outcomes for pupils continue to be above the national average regardless of a pupil’s ability, ethnicity or social background.”

 F.    Pupils have a deep understanding of issues linked to equality, particularly in relation to sexuality. Pupils report a culture that has a zero tolerance towards homophobia.

What I am most pleased about is that the report affirms the actions we have taken over the last 2 years to make the amalgamation between the two site work smoothly. The report happily matches our own strategic self-evaluation and academy improvement plan and inspectors were pleased to see the work we have done in the last 12 months on parental engagement, to improve behaviour and to manage complaints more rapidly and effectively.

I also have the Harris Federation to thank for all the support that is on-going.
