Year 8 Options

Introduction to Options

At the academy we are passionate that we equip every single student with the very best education so they can fulfil their potential. It is our duty to ensure our curriculum is relevant, personalised, challenging, exciting and appropriate.

We are approaching the time that your son/daughter will need to make their option choices for their GCSE/Vocational subjects.  This is a really key time and there are many factors to consider in making these decisions.

There are a number of things to consider when choosing your options:

The subjects you enjoy;

The subjects in which you are making good progress;

If you already have a pretty good idea of a future career, the subjects you need to study at Post 16. Some of you might not      have a definite career path in mind - this is not a problem; choose subjects you enjoy as you are more likely to be drawn to a future pathway relevant to those subjects.

This time of the year can be stressful for students but can also be an exciting time where students will be able to make choices about the subjects they will be studying in Key stage four.

Preparing students for Options

In the lead up to Options we have involved year 8 students in a number of activities to get them thinking about their future career choices.

Activities have included:

  • Tutor time activities based around careers
  • Careers week assemblies
  • University talks
  • Industry talks
  • One to one / group time with Careers advisor
  • Use of Kudos (careers software)

To support you in your conversations with your son/daughter prior to options evening we have set up this options website. Each subject area has given you an outline of the key elements of the course, including key topics studied, assessment, and a video by the Coordinator or subject teacher explaining the subject. We hope you will find this process user friendly. Please take the time to sit with your son/daughter and look at this information, the decisions that you make will affect their future and it is important that you carefully consider the options.

Options evening (27th April)

Year 8 Options evening is on Thursday 27th April 2017, during the evening you and your son/daughter will be given an overview of the options process by the Executive Principal and Head of Academy. You will be given further advice and guidance about the actual choices your son/daughter will be making (note these will also have been on the website).

Options evening starts at different times for different groups of students. You will have received an options letter in the post. In this letter you will have been given a time to arrive at options evening. The options letter will also detail the subjects your son/daughter can choose and what pathway they are on.

During the evening each subject area will be hosting a stall about their subject. This will give you and your son/daughter the opportunity to ask any questions you may have face to face.

Representatives from learning support services will be in attendance as will representatives from the academy leadership team, and the careers team, they will be available to speak to you if you require specific guidance and support.

At the end of the evening you can make option choices straight away, however if at the end of the evening you decided you would like a little more time there will be a further week for you to submit choices via the academy website.

We very much look forward to seeing you on the evening of the 27th April.

We have two pathways – A and B. Each pathway has a personalised curriculum.

Pathways are tailored to individual students. The pathway for your son/daughter will have been sent to you in a letter inviting you to options evening. In this letter it will detail what subjects your son/daughter can choose. If you did not receive a letter and need to check this pathway and your time for options evening please do contact reception at the Academy on 0208 405 5070.

The pathways will be discussed further during the presentation on the evening of the 27th April.
