GCSE Media Studies
Why study Media?
Today we’re surrounded by media wherever we look. There’s the internet, TV, film, radio, magazines, papers …the list goes on.
In Y9 we introduce students to the key concepts required to complete the GCSE course. You will have the opportunity to develop your analytical skills through close analysis of Music Videos, Films, Magazines and TV shows. You will also get the chance to develop your practical film making skills using our digital video cameras and professional editing equipment. You will need to be organised, creative and pay close attention to detail!
Studying Media at GCSE develops and extends students understanding of media theory and practice. Students will complete 3 pieces of coursework in advertising, film promotion and website design. This coursework will enable you to relate your analytical skills to practical design work. You will relate how these products are designed to represent different gorups of people and how they appeal to their target audience.
As well as looking at case studies, students will design, develop and produce their own advert, film poster, film trailer and website to a high standard using digital technology. You will be mastering programmes such as Photoshop, as well as editing their own films on iMacs.
Media Studies links closely to GCSE English and the skills you learn can help you do better in both. Core activities in both subjects are analysing texts, communicating findings and being imaginative and creative. It also links to closely to GCSE Sociology and GCSE Psychology and you will develop a broad understanding of the impact of the Media in our world.
Students will have the chance to work independently, in small groups and as part of the whole class in lessons to explore and develop their own knowledge and skills.
