Year 10 Curriculum

Our curriculum was judged to be "outstanding" by OFSTED in January 2010 when we were inspected. We continually review our curriculum to ensure that is fit for purpose and responsive to the changing needs of the world we all live in. The new Year 10 Curriculum is designed around our core principles of personalised learning, challenge and high aspirations. It is a mixture of compulsory subjects and option subjects. The compulsory subjects are:

  • GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature;
  • GCSE Mathematics (including GCSE Additional Mathematics and/or GCSE Statistics for targeted students)
  • A science related qualification  - Triple Science or Additional Science (including Core Science) or BTEC Science for those students who benefit from a more vocational approach
  • GCSE Religious Studies
  • Core PE ( two periods per week)
  • PCIT (an innovative course of PSHE and Citizenship for one period per week).

Our curriculum for Year 10 students is split into two pathways. Each pathway is carefully designed to challenge students and offer a progressive curriculum.

Pathway A have 5 periods per week of Science, English, Maths and a further 3 periods of Triple Science. Students have the following choices to supplement their core curriculum:

Option A - Humanities/Languages Option B - Humanities/Languages Option C - Free Option Option D - Enrichment

Students opt for one subject from each option block, receiving guidance and support to ensure that they choose the course most suited to their ability, future career plans and interests. This year all students will have an interview with a member of the senior leadership team and embark on a 14-19 learning plan. This plan will guide students to ensure that the Academy is best placed to help them realise their dreams and ambitions.

Feedback from parents has been very good as we offer flexibility in terms of being able to undertake two creative subjects, two humanities subjects and a wider range of foreign language subjects on offer. Our option blocks also offer the flexibility to study creative and vocational subjects depending on the aspirations, abilities and interests of our students.

This variety ensures that every student has a pathway to a Post 16 curriculum that they are fully prepared for. We would hope and encourage our students to continue on to a Post-16 education and our curriculum offer there is also outstanding. We offer a full diet of 35 A level and vocational courses that develop on from KS4 and provide the springboard for entry into higher/further education.
