Enterprise Day HASN for Year 7

On Thursday 24th November HASN had the great pleasure of hosting an Enterprise day for some of the Gifted and Talented Year 7 from across all 9 Academies in the Federation. The aim of the day was to provide students with a stimulating and exciting opportunity to engage in a variety of mathematical activities. It was an action packed, fast paced and interactive day, with Mathematics at the heart of each of the sessions.

The day kicked off with an ‘impossible’ icebreaking event which enabled each student to get tangled up with students from another academy! We started the competition with a Mental Math round in which students showed how quick off the mark they were. The buzzers were buzzing as soon as the questions went on the screen . . . the atmosphere was one of excitement and apprehension as the answers were flashed up once all results were submitted!   It certainly got the brain cells warmed up. Students were then challenged with Logic Problems in which they demonstrated excellent problem solving skills with students from Harris Academy South Norwood achieving the highest result in this round.

Mathematical and detective skills were then employed during the Murder Mystery round. Students were required to crack a series of various codes which led to mathematical or logical clues in order solve the murder in the Math Department. Students were on a par to Columbo!

To conclude, the day ended with a Christmas Bauble challenge in which enterprising skills were tested as students had to use their creativity, knowledge of shapes, business acumen and presentation skills in order to design, create and sell as many Christmas baubles as they can. Students had to be both creative and financially astute in order to generate the most money. It was a close competition throughout the day but Harris Academy South Norwood pipped Harris Academy Falcon Wood to the post to win overall First Place. Congratulations to Harris Academy South Norwood as well as Harris Academy Falcon Wood in 2nd place and Harris Academy Crystal Palace in third place.

The students really enjoyed the experience and they were really positive in their feedback.

Quotes from the students about what they took away from the day’s event:-

‘You should always use all your resources’ Harris Merton

‘I learnt that if you work with other’s it is better’, Harris Merton

‘I will take away that there is no I in team’   Harris South Norwood

Many described the day as ‘interactive’, ‘challenging’, ‘thought-provoking’, ’stimulating’ and yet still ‘enjoyable’!

So thanks to all the staff and students who helped make this possible, looking forward to next year!
