Maths Day
On Thursday March 31, 2011 the following students participated in a ‘Maths Day’ at Harris Academy Merton. The students involved were:
· Quinnan Oldham
· Meghan Takwani
· Hanniel Pinnock
· Chereese Gayle
· Bidhika Shrethsa
· Bravienth Baskerparamalingam
· Katie Darnell Smith
· Shaquille Stephens
· Shannon Jackowski
· Sweynia Dominic-Gunasingham
It was a very exciting and challenging event competing against the most brilliant year eight students from seven of the nine Harris Academies. The ten students were placed in two groups and they worked on a series of activities that displayed their concentration, dedication and great teamwork.
The students were absolutely motivated and expressed their eager to win having participated in a similar event while they were in year seven, and were placed second. For all the tasks the students were required to think at speed and race against their opponents. The twist is that some of the challenges had several answers but to find one required a lot of brainwork. After a few of the tasks the students were more confident and their concentration was absolutely fabulous! At times you could see that their brain was pulling them in many directions at the same time. At the times of confusion they composed themselves and their team work paid off. At the end of the competition HASN students were not pronounced as the winners but were placed second and were all awarded silver medals. However, they were very excited and without even thinking that they will be in year 9 next year and said “We will be back next year”. This showed their determination and how much they like to be winners. I am very proud of them for their achievement and level of participation at the ‘Maths Day’. Well done to all of you and we are looking forward to winning next year !
