Why study GCSE Geography?

Geography offers students the opportunity to study a range of topics that delve into the physical processes of our planet, human societies and the economic and environmental challenges that we face as a global community. Geography is up-to-date and relevant, as well as exciting and adventurous. The Geography department aims to help students understand the world around them and their place within it.

The skills employed within Geography are seldom compartmentalised, rather they are fluid, crossing over into many disciplines such as the sciences, mathematics and other humanities subjects.

What will I study?

The GCSE provided by OCR has 3 units:

Unit 1: Our Natural World

  • In this unit you study Global Hazards, Changing Climate, Distinctive Landscapes and Sustaining Ecosystems.
  • Fieldwork – In year 10 Geographers go on a day trip to the river Tillingbourne in Surrey to study the channel shape and how it changes downstream due to human and physical factors.

Unit 2: People and Society

In this unit you study Urban Futures, Dynamic Development, UK in the 21st Century and Resource Reliance.

Fieldwork – In year 9 Geographers spend a day comparing the levels of deprivation between Norwood Junction and Crystal Palace.

Unit 3: Geographical Exploration

There isn’t any new content for unit 3, it’s all about applying what was studied in unit 1 and 2.

How will I be assessed?

There are three exams in Geography, one on each unit. Geographical skills are assessed in all three exams and fieldwork skills in unit 1 and 2. All the exams take place at the end of year 11.

Unit 1: Our Natural World

1hour 15minute exam worth 35% of your final grade
